Requirements

The DMV allows its residents to customize their car numbers. By deciding on the specific lettering of the tag you are adding your unique touch to it. Before applying for customization, look through the main requirements:

  • First of all, Personalized license plates are allowed to contain a maximum of 8 characters (7 digits and letters and a space). You can use letters A to Z and numbers from 0 to 9. The characters of motorcycle and autocycle may be a maximum of 6. Punctuation marks and symbols cannot be used.
  • Secondly, the responsible public body should approve your combination. Choose a unique combination that is not being used currently. Besides, it cannot imply vulgar, intolerable, or violent words or phrases.
  • Thirdly, with several clicks, you may check the availability of the placard. Use the online Specialty plate system offered on the DMV official website.

Application Procedure

The state allows its residents to apply for individualized placards online or by mail. To practice online application, visit NE DMV’s website, scroll down and click on Order your specialty tag online, then follow the instructions.

If you prefer to apply through mail, you have to complete Personalized Nebraska License Plate Application. This application form has sections where you have to provide data on the registered owner and details of the vehicle.

Under the owner information, you have to provide the name, address, city, state, ZIP, and phone of the authorized owner. In the case of the vehicles that have been hired and have not been registered yet, the leasing agency stands for the authorized owner and you have to provide the latter’s details.

Under the section of the vehicle information, you have to choose the type of it, provide the VIN, current distinctive car number, titling number, region of authorization, and county number. Leased automobiles and non-resident military are subject to some exceptions.

Then you have to choose among specialty tag options and indicate 3 choices of preferred messages. Each of the writings has to be suitable for you. As if your first choice is not accessible or the state does not confirm it, the responsible verifying body will inevitably consider the second choice. Besides, after applying, you cannot transform the combinations and the state will not issue refunds.

After filling out all the required data, send the completed application form and the fees by post to:
